  • YEAR 7 STUDENTS RECEIVE BBC MICRO:BIT

    Wed 25 May 2016

Every year 7 student at Harris received a present this week, a BBC Micro:bit.  A BBC Micro:bit is a small computer that the students will be learning to program after half term. The students will be developing all sorts of different gadgets with them. When we are finished with the BBC Micro:bits in school, students can take them home and do some further development, should their interests be programmed by the taster sessions.  We look forward to seeing what ideas they come up with!

  • GARGANTUA PERFORMANCE

    Tue 24 May 2016

In April Harris performed the epic monster play ‘Gargantua’ for National Theatre’s Connections, the largest theatre festival in the world.  We chose ‘Gargantua’ because it offered some of the most exciting theatrical challenges; in terms of setting the various locations, the action sequences and of course presenting the monster who gives us the title of our play. ‘Gargantua’ is a play written by Carl Grose one of the most theatrical writers writing in the UK today and he is currently writing for the RSC and the National Theatre. He writes for Kneehigh who have produced some of the most powerful productions in the last 20 years.

I would like to thank the parents who supported our wonderful students in rehearsing for 68 hours over half-term  and the Easter break; your support was invaluable. My team of Mrs. Farmer and Mrs. Davies and Miss Lembo believed that our company of young actors was a remarkable one and one of the best we have ever had the pleasure to work with.

The National Theatre wrote a report and this is what they said of our show:

'There was great discipline from the ensemble throughout with a fluid energy from scene to scene and strong driving pace. On the whole, the storytelling was full of clarity, probably the most clear I’ve seen this story told.'

The weekend of May bank holiday is one few of us will forget quickly. It was when our wonderful cast of Gargantua performed on the main stage at the Warwick Arts Centre. Harris Academy was the only school and youth theatre to be represented from Rugby in the National Theatre’s ‘National Connections’ festival. Having finished rehearsing on the Friday (a teacher training day) the cast assembled on Saturday morning in the rain at Warwick to unload the tardis-esque school minibus with the entirety of our set, costumes, props, and music equipment.  We quickly unloaded it through the bay at stage door and got registered for the festival. It was brilliant to be able to watch 6 other productions over the two days. And we were lucky to have our own workshop with the renowned Highly Sprung physical theatre. Our performance on Saturday was magical with everyone sparkling on stage producing confident performances which our fabulous audience thoroughly enjoyed.

  • HARRIS U15'S WIN COUNTY CUP FINAL

    Fri 13 May 2016

    U.15 WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY CUP FINAL

    11th May 2016- Leamington FC

Kenilworth School 1 Vs Harris Academy 2

On a very warm and muggy evening, Harris Academy went to Leamington FC full of confidence on the back of a convincing semi-final win 8-0.  Despite this score line the students were well aware that Kenilworth School had a number of players who played at a good level, including one player on Coventry City’s books.  Despite this we have a side full of County and District players and knew that we, performing to our best, could get the result that we were looking for.

After the opening 5 minutes, where we struggled to get hold of the ball, we settled into our play and began to make numerous big challenges and dominated the possession.  Finley T made many thunderous line clearances from defence and Oskar L made many telling and menacing runs down the right wing.  Harris piled on the pressure and around the 20 minute mark Bailey C put Harris Academy 1-0 up.  The boys settled back down and again took the attack to Kenilworth thwarting any small chances that Kenilworth threw at them.  You could see that Harris had their opponents rattled and this told in many reckless challenges from Kenilworth.  With approximately 5 minutes remaining Bailey C pulled the trigger again, with the keeper slipping, making the score 2-0  going into half-time.
The second half was much the same for the first 20 minutes with Flavius M hitting the post from a header.  Kenilworth then stepped up a gear throwing everything at the Harris defence.  Mr Crofts made some telling tactical changes to ensure that we close out the result.  Finley T marshalled his troops extremely well and every single player gave 110%.  With approximately 90 seconds to go we conceded a goal but thankfully, despite tired legs, it was too little too late.  For the first time in our history we were U.15 County Champions and richly deserved it was too.  Every single player needs special mention and also the tactical awareness of Mr Crofts.  Many spectators commented on how well Harris Academy played and conducted themselves throughout the evening.
    Well done!
