  • "A Day in the Lab": Life Sciences Discovery Day

    Fri 24 May 2019

On Wednesday 22nd May, a group of students from Harris attended a discovery day at the University of Warwick in the School of Life Sciences. Together with students from other local schools, they had to use nets to fish mosquito larva out of the pond, they then took these scoops of water and were excited to find under the microscope more than just the larva, they found pond fleas and midge larva as well.  After lunch they saw blood smears and human/mosquito tissue infected with malaria, today was extremely successful as remarked by a student quoting ”Now I’m considering working in a lab”, Faythe from St Thomas  More remarked “I will invest more time into biology at school” and Ingmarr from Harris found that “everything!” was valuable.

Gradu8 is one of the many enrichment programmes Harris runs for students.  The programme includes:

    • Sutton Scholars
    • UniTracks
    • ThinkHigher
    • Student Progression
    • The Brilliant Club
    • CREST Awards
    • Duke of Edinburgh Awards
    • Talented and Gifted (TAG) Programme

Dr Stephen M Cullen, University of Warwick said, “As a university researcher in widening participation and able pupil provision, I have extensive experience of programmes to support able young people. Harris Church of England Academy’s Talented and Gifted (TAG) programme is one of the best I have encountered. Harris has built a strong model of provision for its brightest pupils, with dedicated staff responsible for ensuring the delivery of a very wide range of opportunities designed to enhance the learning experience of those young people. This has been accomplished within Harris’ overall commitment to ensuring high quality support for all its pupils. The Academy provides an example of just what can be achieved with the right approach, and a lot of hard work.”

  • Students attend STEM Discovery Day at Coventry University

    Thu 16 May 2019

On Monday 13th May, four Think Higher students from Harris attended a STEM Discovery Day at Coventry University, along with 49 students from other schools.  The day was led by Smallpeice Trust, an organisation founded by engineer Dr Cosby D P Smallpeice in 1966 to give young people the support they need to bring their big ideas to life through science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Jon, from Smallpeice tasked the students to work in teams to deisgn and build aeroplanes.  They had to cost out their design and draw on their marketing skills to promote their aeroplane companies.  They built their planes using balsa wood and their chosen materials.  Students used their creativity to design their airline companies, including logos and even some uniforms and menus!  They even flew their aeroplanes in University Square next to the cathedral.

Students enjoyed the day with one commenting that he would “most likely take a career in engineering.”
