    OVERVIEW

    WHAT DOES FOOD TECHNOLOGY COVER?

    Food Technology is an exciting and practical subject that develops creativity, independence and life-long skills. Students learn how to plan, prepare and cook a wide range of dishes while understanding the science, nutrition and sustainability behind the food we eat. The subject encourages students to:

    • Explore, develop and present food ideas through research, planning and practical cooking.
    • Show creativity, flair and independence when designing and making dishes.
    • Work both collaboratively and independently in a safe kitchen environment.
    • Develop practical skills using modern equipment and technology.
    • Understand nutrition, food science, food safety and the provenance of ingredients.

    SMSC IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

    We believe students’ Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development is strongly supported through Food Technology. Students are encouraged to think about the impact of their food choices on their health, the environment and society. Sustainability, reducing food waste and understanding where food comes from are central themes within our curriculum.

    Students also develop social responsibility, respect and teamwork through shared practical experiences. We expect students to support each other, demonstrate safe and responsible behaviour and build confidence in discussing and evaluating their work.

    SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

    Spiritual development plays an important role in Food Technology. Preparing and sharing food allows students to develop confidence, independence and pride in their achievements. The creative process of planning and cooking meals encourages students to explore new ideas, flavours and techniques, helping them discover talents they may not have realised they had. Through this, students gain self-belief and resilience.

    MORAL DEVELOPMENT IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

    Food Technology encourages students to develop a strong moral understanding of food choices. Students explore ethical issues such as sustainability, food miles, fair trade and reducing food waste. They learn to make informed decisions about ingredients and understand how their choices can affect both people and the planet.

    SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

    Food Technology lessons promote teamwork, communication and responsibility. Students work together in practical lessons, learning how to organise tasks, share equipment and maintain a safe working environment. Peer and self-evaluation are used to encourage constructive feedback and improve outcomes. Students develop respect for others’ ideas, tastes and dietary needs.

    CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

    Food Technology celebrates the diversity of global cuisines and traditions. Students explore foods from different cultures and learn how history, religion and geography influence what people eat. This helps develop an appreciation of cultural diversity and broadens students’ understanding of the world through food.
