  • HARRIS PUPIL WINS AWARD AT COVENTRY SPEECH AND DRAMA FESTIVAL

    Thu 27 Nov 2014

HARRIS ACADEMY'S JAKE PRIOR WINS FESTIVAL CUP.

Harris C. of E. Academy's Year 9 student Jake Prior proudly lifted the Coventry Speech and Drama festival cup shortly before 7pm on Saturday 15th November at Bablake independent school in Coventry.  Jake had scored the highest mark in a highly competitive 14-16 year old acting class. Candidates had to deliver dramatic monologues and Jake's achievement was all the more impressive as he was one of the youngest candidates with many students at least a year or two older than him.

Other Harris Academy students impressed and brilliant monologues were delivered by Leonie Maguire, Isabelle Glass, Bernadette Reynolds and Matthew Morgan as well as other young people from the region. The adjudicator said of Jake’s comic performance which achieved a distinction that he, ‘brought the character to life from the very first line.’

Earlier in the day Leila Hasell, Josh Smith, Dylan Tuckey and Oscar Farmer brought their characters to life in the younger festival class drawing strong praise from the adjudicator and making their Mums, Dads and supporters very proud.

Thanks go to Mrs. Davis who was in attendance through the day to offer her spirited support and costume and props when needed! The students entered the festival in preparation for their prestigious LAMDA qualification exams which will take place in March. They have been training every Friday after school with Mr. Browning and Mrs. Davis since June and are part of the talented drama students group which is given the rigorous challenge of learning and delivering 3 minute long dramatic solo speeches.

  • JAGUAR LAND ROVER VIDEO CONFERENCE

    Mon 17 Nov 2014

On Thursday 6th November 2014, ten Year 11 students from the Harris Academy joined with students from two Birmingham schools in a Video Conference with representatives from Jaguar Land Rover Recruitment Services.

The aims of the conference were to allow students to raise queries and to ask questions regarding applying for both the Advanced and the Higher Apprenticeships with Jaguar Land Rover. Included in the panel from JLR were two current apprentices and two representatives from the Recruitment Department.

Harris students asked a variety of questions ranging from ratios of female to male apprentices to asking for a detailed account of the recruitment process.

The conference was hosted by staff from the Virtual University who worked remotely; in conjunction with Mr Merry ICT Manager at Harris Academy in order to synchronise the technology required to make the conferencing possible.

Feedback from those students involved agreed unanimously that the conference had been a great success and that they were pleased to have been given the opportunity to speak to young people that were going through the process and to learn what it takes to pursue this career goal.

  • BARCELONA THEATRE TRIP 2014

    Wed 05 Nov 2014

We returned to Rugby at 9.45am on Thursday morning (30/10/14) after what was a truly unforgettable 9th international drama trip in the last 15 years.

The trip was very successful. Most importantly the students grew as people as their new experiences with others, familiar and otherwise, challenged them to be open and like the artists we studied, see people and the world around us with new, generous and playful eyes! It was a privilege to behold. The students enjoyed developing their creative drama skills and they valued the practitioners who challenged them with infectious positivity and a real sense of fun.

This is what the students thought:

‘I found this trip excellent and a confidence booster for me.’ Lotty

‘I loved this drama experience because it made me feel much more confident in myself and while doing drama.’ Imogen

‘ I got to hold the Champions league trophy. Thank you for the opportunity.’ Tom

‘Barcelona was truly a once in a lifetime experience! Our workshops and practitioners were so exciting and inspirational.’ Olivia

‘I loved going to the Nou Camp, it was one of the best experiences of my life.’ Ethan

‘All the teachers and practitioners are very supportive and were very encouraging throughout the trip.’

‘I really loved doing the flamenco dancing. Everybody got involved and said it was really fun and although our hands were red and sore from all the clapping we didn’t want it to end! The hour went too quickly for us!’ Ella

‘I really loved the workshops as we focused on physical theatre.’ Hannah

‘I have learnt new skills that I will take home and use in my drama pieces.’ Sian

‘I enjoyed making new friends and getting even closer to people I was already friends with.’ Sammy

‘I really enjoyed being in our teams as it brought out our creative and determined side.’ Lotty

‘One of my highlights was watching one of the quietest people dance their hearts out when we did flamenco and the disco.’ Leonie

‘I loved seeing the true sides of people and making new friends.’ Camelia

‘I really had a great time in Spain and my group was amazing.’ Adam

‘Thank you for such an amazing trip, especially Super Simmsy!’ Ethan

‘The art galleries were amazing and I especially liked the Gaudi park the best.’ Imogen

‘I had a brilliant time and nearly all of that was down to the teachers and practitioners.’ Jack

‘This trip has been an amazing opportunity to boost our drama skills set and our confidence. We have all learnt techniques that will stay with us and improve the quality of our drama. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I will treasure the memories forever.’ Rowan

‘The best part of this trip was going to the Nou Camp as it had been my life’s dream to go there and see where my heroes play. It gave me the inspiration to be the best I can be in everything I do.’ Cheyanne

    ‘It is perfect.’ Ryan
