Another successful Careers and Apprenticeship Week at Harris CofE Academy

For the 4th year running, Harris C of E Academy took part in both National Careers Week and National Apprenticeships Week which took place from Monday, 4th March to Friday, 8th March 2019.

National Careers Week is “a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people leaving education.”

National Apprenticeship Week is “coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.”

So how did Harris participate in these two national events?

Selected Year 9 and Year 10 students attended a presentation with Heart of England Training {HOET} who talked about all of the courses they offer and apprenticeships.

Assembly for the whole of Year 10 with “The National Apprenticeship Service” to give a speech on what Apprenticeships are, where to find them and how to apply for them.

Careers Detective Workshops with the whole of Year 7, where the students had to ask questions and find out what job our visitors did.  We had a number of visitors attending whose roles included an Archaeologist, Engineers, Occupational Health and Health and Safety to name a few.

Selected Year 10 and 11 students attended a presentation with the RAF.

Selected Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10      students attended a presentation with Rugby Town FC.

One of the main themes running through this years’ event was to tackle “stereotyping” in the workplace and to portray that both male and females can work in all industries and we shouldn’t make assumptions based on appearance or gender.

We also had career quotes of the day including;

“The future depends on what you do today.” {Mahatma Ghandi}

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!” {Audrey Hepburn}

“Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.”                  {Katharine Whitehorn}

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” {Steve Jobs}

Tutor time activities also took place for all year groups over the week where different career based activities were designed to support the appropriate age groups.

Thank you to all of you who took part and we hope that our students got a lot of useful information and contacts from the week which could inspire and motivate them for their future careers.

Please remember, if you know of anyone who could support us with our future career events or if you yourself would like to be involved, please contact our Careers Advisor, Mrs O’Brien—obrien.a@harriscofeacademy.co.uk.  We would love to hear from you!
