  • October Mental Health Bulletin

Thu 20 Oct 2022 Mr Unwin

What to expect in this month's bulletin:

    • How is the emotional vocabulary going?
    • Classroom Wellbeing Toolkit from The Anna Freud Centre

    Emotional Vocabulary

At the start of the term I distributed laminated copies of Feelings Wheels to all staff.  I hope that some of you have been able to find opportunities to use the tool to encourage students to develop a greater understanding of their emotions.

Remember the phrase “Name it to Tame it.”

    The Classroom Wellbeing Toolkit

The following passage is from the Anna Freud Centre website introducing the Classroom Wellbeing Toolkit.  As this is quite a lengthy read I have not included anything else in this month’s bulletin in the hope you all get a chance to read through the resource.

This evidence-based toolkit, created in partnership with the Early Intervention Foundation (EIF) is designed to help secondary school staff take steps to improve students’ mental health and wellbeing through everyday practices.

This new resource will help build teachers' confidence to address the needs of their students, covering five strategy areas on:

    • building supportive relationships
    • creating a classroom environment where all students feel they belong
    • promoting good mental health
    • responding to stress, low mood and anxiety
    • preventing bullying, cyberbullying and sexual harassment.

It is designed for secondary school subject teachers, but will also be useful for teaching assistants, librarians and other support staff.

It is not about asking teachers to be mental health professionals, but instead focuses on enhancing the quality of the classroom environment and staff–student relationships.

  • Year 8 students take on The Challenge

    Mon 03 Oct 2022

Faraday Challenge Day – Y8 Students

We were very lucky to be offered the chance to host this event again this year.  Last year’s Year 8 students had great fun taking part in a similar project.

The Faraday Challenge is an Institute of Engineering initiative and is an annual competition based on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering & maths).  A “real-world” challenge is given to six teams of 6 students who, working as a team, come up with a plan, a design and a finished product which fulfills the brief set by the Challenge Leader.

And all in just one day!

Good Luck to our teams who will be taking part at Harris on Tuesday 4 October 2022.

  • Channel 4 visits Harris

    Mon 03 Oct 2022

We were delighted to welcome a team from Channel 4 to deliver interative workshops giving students an insight into careers in the broadcasting industry and encouraging them to focus on their strengths and skills. Googlebox's, Baasit Saddiqui visited us for a Q&A session.

The fun and interactive sessions allowed students in Years 7-9 to focus on their individual skills and strengths whilst highlighting the importance of their school subjects. Year 9 students had the added bonus of meeting Baasit Saddiqui in person to pose their questions about his career journey and of course, found out more about his experiences on Googlebox.
